We recently moved passed another milestone in the renovation of the farmhouse. Things are looking on track for completion this summer. Hopefully, I won’t live to regret typing those words.
When our farmhouse was first built in the 1830s, it was a 1 1/2 story building. When Frank Shaw, Marion’s father, renovated the house after World War I, he added a full second story to make it the 2 1/2 story house that it is today. Unfortunately, being the old school Vermont farmer that he was, Frank took some shortcuts in the renovation. That created some structural issues nearly 100 years later.
Over the past six weeks, our construction team has been reinforcing virtually every major support beam and floor joist in the house. They have also been pouring new footings in our gravel floor basement.
The majority of the structural work is now complete and the house stands ready to last another couple hundred years. And we’re ready to move forward with the plumbing and electrical work.
